Note 1: if the floor is laid before the course of blocks above the joist, the upper flanges of the joist caps will be below the level of the floor and therefore not present a tripping hazard.

Note 2: the upper flange of the joist cap becomes embedded in the mortar above the joist cap to complete the seal.
